Overview of Our Master’s and Doctoral Courses
The Department of International Studies (DOIS) offers both Master’s (Master of International Studies) and Doctoral courses (Doctor of International Studies).
No Japanese is required for admission as well as to complete the degree.
Even if you have absolutely no knowledge about the Japanese language or live outside Japan, you may apply for the Master’s or Doctoral courses of the DOIS through the “Special Selection for Applicants with Overseas Education.”
The DOIS offers many courses in English, and all the faculty members can speak English so that students can achieve a Master’s or Doctoral degree without any knowledge of the Japanese language.
Two Types of Applications for Master’s Course
1. Regular Admission
•Written and oral exams at the Kashiwa campus are required.
•The written exam is provided both in Japanese and English.
•In the oral exam, the interview can be done in English, if the applicant requests it.
•Two application periods in a year: June, and November.
2. Special Selection for Applicants with Overseas Education (SSAOE)
•All applicants are expected to take the Ordinary Exam, but those who graduated from a high school outside Japan and have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution outside Japan can apply for SSAOE.
•Admission is based on the screening of application materials, assessment of English proficiency (see the Entrance Examination Guides for details), and an online oral examination. Only those who pass the document screening will be required to take an online oral examination. Applicants do not need to come to Japan for the examination.
•Two application periods in a year: June, and November.
One Type of Applications for Doctoral Course
1. Regular Admission
•Admission is based on the screening of application materials, assessment of English proficiency (see the Entrance Examination Guides for details), and an online oral examination.
•Two application periods in a year: June, and November.

Note on the choice of the Examination Schedule and the month of enrollment for international students who require visas
Please note that successful applicants who plan to apply for a CoE through GSFS will only be admitted in April from taking the entrance examination Schedule A, and only in October from taking the entrance examination Schedule B.
Please note that student visa applications require a certificate of eligibility (COE), which is attached to the enrollment status (doctoral, master’s, or non-matriculated research student). In particular, when you apply for a place as a matriculated student and as a non-matriculated research student simultaneously, and are successful in both applications, to enroll as a matriculated student you need a student visa based on a matriculated student COE. Even if you first obtain a student visa as a non-matriculated research student in such a case, you still need to obtain a student visa based on a separate matriculated student COE.
